There are several songs named
"Ella". Cantemos has two: this one and one sung by Pedro Infante.
*pibe is Argentine slang for a little kid.
Leonardo Favio can immediately be recognized as an
Argentine in this song by his pronunciation of Ella and Yo with a zh
sound--a hallmark of Spanish-speakers from Argentina and Uruguay. Leonardo is the great
Argentine singer of modern times, and also was heavily involved in politics as a "Peronista",
a supporter of the [in]famous dictator Juan Domingo Perón (husband of Eva). Leonardo was
the Master of Ceremonies for Perón's disastrous return to Argentina in 1974, when the Montoneros
opened fire and hundreds were killed. This was the beginning of Argentina's
"dirty war".
