Platicando - Talking

Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón to Spanish speakers), the man who found the "New World" while thinking he had reached China or Japan. While he was born in Italy, he sailed under the patronage of Queen Isabela of Spain. While both countries claim him, in the United States (largely because the number of Italian-Americans is far greater than that of Spanish-Americans), Columbus Day parades are largely Italian affairs.

Many Mexicans (and other Latinos) blame Columbus for all the ills that befell their Indian ancestors, and cordially hate him. Attempts by this group to disrupt Columbus Day parades and other celebrations of Columbus are common, on often successful.

Montezuma (Motecuzoma in Nahuatl, the language of the Mexica (Aztecs), and Moctezuma in modern Spanish), the last emperor of the Mexica/Aztec empire.

His indecisiveness, along with the resentment of many other tribes who had been persecuted by the Mexica/Aztecs, played a big role in allowing a few hundred Spaniards, with thousands of native allies, to completely destroy the great--and theretofore undefeated--Aztec Empire

By the way, this picture is imaginary, since no real portraits of Montezuma were ever done in his lifetime.

Hernán Cortés as an embittered old man. He never received what he thought was his due reword for the fantastic feat of conquering Mexico.

He ended up in Spain, where he died in relative poverty.

Although he could be cruel, he was a devout Catholic who truly believed that his mission was to save the souls of the Indians.

A gory representation of an Aztec human sacrifice, painted by an Indian. The Aztecs, as well as most of the other tribes in what is no Mexico, believed that the gods had to be nourished with human hearts, less they grow weak and angry, the sun not shine and rain never come.

This was the particular aspect of the culture that most disgusted and outraged the Spaniards. They saw no connection of this with the burning at the stake of victims of the inquisition--indeed in terms of numbers of human lives sacrificed, the inquisition was small potatoes compared to the mass sacrifices of the Aztecs.

As the picture shows, after cutting out the heart and presenting it to the god being worshipped, the body was pushed down the steep stairs to the plaza below, where it was butchered by professionals, and the parts distributed according to rank. The leftovers were fed to the animals in the zoo, or just thrown into the lake.

Some of the original walls of the Inca capital, Cuzco. The Inca were fabulous stone masons. They fit the stones together so closely, without mortar, that even a piece of paper can't be inserted between them.

A modern artist's rendering of the Templo Mayor of Tenotichlan (Mexico City). When the Templo Mayor was dedicated in 1487, between 2,000 and 20,000 human sacrifices were made over four days (estimates of the number sacrificed vary wildly). Most of these were prisoners of war.

According to Aztec theology, death as a sacrifice was equal to death in battle, and guaranteed access to paradise.

Free Full FSI Programmatic Spanish Course
For an indefinite period, we will be offering the Foreign Service Institute's "other" Spanish course in full as a free premium with orders over $150. At present it's only available as a Download, but a CD will be coming soon. I have seen this course offered for anywhere from around $70 to over $400! More information about Programmatic Spanish is here.

You can also order Programmatic Spanish with an order less than $150, or simply by itself.
FSI Programmatic Spanish (Physical CD) $104.98
FSI Programmatic Spanish (Download) $62.99

We strongly believe that we offer the most effective and complete selection of Spanish language learning materials available anywhere. Our primary program, Platiquemos, was not thought up by Don Casteel, but is a modernized and optimized for present day usage version of the FSI Basic Course in Spanish, for 50 years considered the "gold standard" of Spanish programs. The main differences are 20 instead of 4 voices, additional cues for use without the book (in a car, on a walkman while jogging, etc.) We've also added copious period illustrations, which are used to introduce interesting and useful cultural/historical information.

Most of our "extras/premiums" are completely exclusive. Nobody else offers a collection of songs with transcriptions, translations and notes like Cantemos, nor does anybody else offer an E-book in any way comparable to ours. The purpose of these extras is not only to enhance your learning, but to make it more enjoyable.

We also provide much more information about Platiquemos and the "extras/premiums" than anybody else--almost all of them just tell you theirs is the best, but offer no details. If you know of any exceptions, please let us know.

In addition, we offer many different formats and packages for the convenience (and saving) of our customers, whom we prefer to refer to as our "students".

We believe we've succeeded in our mission of bringing you the best--and when you try it, we're confident you'll agree.

A note about "testimonials". I never even hint to a client that he or she give us a "testimonial", yet we receive a surprising number of complimentary e-mails. I tend to be suspicious of the outfits that have a plethora of praiseful recommendations--especially those with pictures. (Since nobody has ever ent me a picture in connection with a complimentary email, I suspect collusion in those that do.) In any case, I will shortly post some of the e-mails we've received. I just want you-all to know that they are totally unsolicited, and usually come as a surprise to me. About the others--do you think they're surprised?

Catalog of Español Rápido (FAST Spanish)
FAST Spanish, on which Español Rápido is based, was developed in the 1980's by the Foreign Service Institute to ease the difficulties of the first few days or weeks in a new country. It is used at FSI for those who are deemed not to need the high level of proficiency the Basic Course (Platiquemos) leads to (secretaries, administrative personnel, etc.) It is an excellent way to begin learning Spanish, and also can be a very useful supplement to the Platiquemos program.
More information about Español Rápido, as well as some samples is here.

A satisfied customer counting the money he saved by ordering here.

Actually, that's a lie. This is actually a contemporary caricature of Francisco Pizarro, the Conquistador of Peru and the most greedy and cruel of all the Conquistadores.

Bartolomé de las Casas, friar and missionary. He was one of the few Spaniards who took an interest in defending the rights of Indians as human beings, and preserving their art and literature. He wrote a very critical book about the Conquest, which didn´t endear him to the Spaniards in New Spain (Mexico).

Juan de Zumarraga, the first Bishop of New Spain (Mexico). While a sincere and even compassionate man, he believed that destroying all vestiges of the former Indian civilization(s) was best for their souls.

Antonio de Mendoza, the first Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico). He was known to be fair and just, and is considered by many to be the best Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico) in its 400 years as a Spanish colony.

Santa Rosa de Lima, the first Roman Catholic Saint to be born in the Western Hemisphere. While her official biography says she was born in Lima, Peru, many Panamanians are certain that she was born on the little island of Taboga, in the Pacific Ocian near Panama City.

In any case, it is indisputable that Francisco Pizarro set out from Taboga on his conquest of the Inca empire.

A suspected "crypto Jew" being questioned by agents of the inquisition in Mexico. a "Crypto Jew" was one who was suspected of having hypocritically converted to Christianity to avoid expulsion from Spain, while secretly continuing to practice Judaism.

The inquisition in Mexico never reached the proportions of that in Spain. There were some burnings at the stake of Crypto Jews and Indians, but nothing like on the scale of burnings in Spain.

Atahualpa, the last Inca Emperor. After holding him captive for some time, and forcing him to hand over every ounce of gold he could get from his loyal subjects, the Spaniards treacherously murdered him.

The woman in the picture is probably his wife (or one of them).

Francisco Pizarro, by unanimous consent the most rapacious and cruel of all the Conquistadors. He was finally killed by his own henchmen, who believed he was cheating them of their share of the plunder, which he probably was.
