Comments about Platiquemos
from People who have used the Program

Ever wonder how we get people to say nice things about us?  Scene from a typical Platiquemos class.

Up to my old tricks again.  This is actually a Spaniard flogging an Indian while two more wait their turn.  The irony is that the Indians were probably given to the Spaniard in "encomienda", that is he was supposed to care for both their physical and spiritual welfare.

From the Director and Coordinator of the Cuernavaca Language School, the oldest in Mexico (explaining why the school adopted the Platiquemos Program as its primary vehicle of instruction.:

[English Translation] Why did we decide for Platiquemos? In the first place, because it is the same FSI [program] which through the years has demonstrated to us the attracitons of ease of use on our part; and the speed with which the students learn to speak our languagage, if they apply the system in a dedicated fashion and with the opportunity to put it in practice in appropriate situations in the school and [host] family. And, in the second place, because of the modern, legible and more accessible presentation [of Platiquemos compared to original FSI], including cultural additions and the modification of some sentences.

From former Secretary of State of the United States Lawrence Eagleburger:

Larry Eagleburger is the only career diplomat ever to be appointed Secretary of State of the United States, a position he held during the Gulf War.  Larry was also one of the first students of the Foreign Service Institute Spanish program. He has furnished the following statement for the exclusive use of Platiquemos:

"I am a firm believer in the Foreign Service Institute's Spanish language program. I took the course early in my Foreign Service career, and thanks to the quality of the teaching methods used, was able to go from no competence in the language to an almost bilingual facility in only a few months. I know of no method of teaching a  foreign language that even approaches the quality of the FSI program."

Also, from the Corporate Relations Officer of a Federal Reserve Bank:

"The program ... makes the language come alive! The program builds vocabulary, improves grammar and increases pronunciation simultaneously."

From an Electric Utility Executive:

"I have taken other classes in Spanish, including some in Mexico, but the Platiquemos program is the best. I have really advanced my speaking ability."

An Environmental Engineer says:

"I really like the way the course is set up. It is so much more realistic than other courses I have taken."

From a student in Switzerland:

"I got a good basic foundation of Spanish in four weeks, enough to chat with my family and feel confortable by asking things anywhere." [This is from a student who studied at the Cuernavaca Language School, and represents the equivalent of the first two levels of the Platiquemos program]

A teacher in Colorado:

"As a former language teacher, I know when I see a good language instruction. And what I saw at Cuernavaca Language School was the best! "[What she saw was the Platiquemos program in action]

From an Adult Education teacher in the Colorado Prison System:

"I have taken many Spanish language courses for the past 15 years, and yet I have learned more from just one Platiquemos [level] than all of those previous courses put together."

A businessperson:

"I found the classes challenging. The format was easy to follow and the set-up made it possible to learn more on your own with the book and additional teachings with the cassettes."

From a retired firefighter who lives part-time in Mexico:

"I have taken several Spanish advanced courses, and I feel Platiquemos offers the best format to learn the Spanish language in a practical and functional way."
