The
Historical Context
The second
half of the nineteenth century might be characterized as one of consolidation.
There were relatively few wars, and general economic progress--although
all countries didn't progress equally. It was also a time of dictators,
and saw the establishment of "caudillismo", which is still a threat to
democracy in Latin America. Mexico finally firmly upheld its independence
with the defeat of the French-backed Emperor Maximilian. Argentina and its
neighbors underwent a period of unprecedented prosperity as refrigeration made
Argentina's huge beef supply economically available for export, and attracted a
wave of immigration from Italy which changed both the language and culture.
Colombia was in a state of civil war, which some contend is still going on.
Central America became the focus of foreign coffee and banana interests, whose
domination of these countries gave birth to the term "Banana
Republic". Spain had to suffer through the loss of its last
significant colonies (Cuba and the Philippines) to an expansionist United
States.
Level
Six Overview
Level Six
continues with more about the subjunctive, something which frightens a lot of
Spanish learners unnecessarily. Don't be put off by the technical
descriptions of the course content--the important thing to remember is that it's
the subjunctive mood, not tense. What that means very simply is that you
use the subjunctive to express how you feel about something. The
subjunctive is used to express such things as doubt, desire (that's why the
command form is the subjunctive), etc. You'll learn lots of examples, and
have lots of practice using these examples to form new expressions. There is also some "easier" stuff interspersed; if you just do your best and make the time investment, you'll soon be a subjunctive "expert"!
